The birth of the "Repubblica di Salo’ "

There was, however, a third part of Italy vindicating its own political authority in the country by the support of the German armies.
After the political fall of Mussolini, the whole PNF (National Fascist Party) broke up. Its leaders hided or ran away. The crowds exulted for the Fascism’s end.
However the Fascism revived, under the direct German supervision, in the Repubblica di Salò; it was formed by the old fascist leader conflicting among them and it was subordinated to the military and economic demands of the Reich, which wanted to take advantage of the Italian strategic position without any real trust toward its ex-allies.
On September 15th of 1943 the radio communicated that "Benito Mussolini has taken back the supreme direction of the fascism in Italy. Three days later, in a broadcast discourse from Munich, Mussolini, announcing the rebirth of a fascist State, pointed out the assignment to take back the weapons joined with Germany. On September 23rd, Repubblica di Salò’s official date of birth, Mussolini returned in Italy settling in the Fortress of the Caminate.
